International Day of families

International Day of families aims to highlight the importance of families around the world. The day also provides an oppurtunity to raise awareness about some of the issues families face and to "increase the knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families" (United Nations, 2010).

International Day of families was established by the United Nations in 1993 and is held annually on 15 May. The day has inspired many national family days around the world and awareness events such as conferences, panel discussions, newpaper and magazine articles, workshops, and much more. Each year International Day of families has a new theme which in the past has included, "Changing Families: Challenges and Opportunities," "Fathers and Families: Responsibilities and Challenges," "Families and Persons with Disabilities" and more.
